proneとsupineの区別がつかない

日本語では仰向けとうつ伏せを間違えることは少ない。仰向けは上を仰ぎ見ているわけだし、うつ伏せは伏せているのだから下を見ているとすぐわかる。

proneはラテン語のpronus：「前傾」から来ているらしい。proがforwardを意味している。

supineはラテン語のsupinus：「背中を下にして寝る(=仰向け)」から来ているらしいが、いまいち連想できない。

ネイティブでも間違えるらしい。語法に関するサイトにも説明がある。

supineを"soup in navel"(へその中の汁)と覚えるらしい。水の中で仰向けに浮くと水がへそに入るイメージなのか。

決定的なものがないので、ひとまずproneのproで妥協する。
